Code 39 barcodes (Code 3 of 9 barcodes) are widely used for ID, tracking, inventory, shipping, distribution, and on forms and labels. Almost all scanners (except POS cash registers) read Code 39 barcodes.

The asterisk ( * ) is the Code 39 start and stop bar:  *AZALEA*   *3.14159265* An optional mod 43 checkdigit is available but is rarely used.

Code 39 encodes alphanumeric strings or almost any length within reason. The Code 39 character set is A-Z uppercase, 0-9, several punctuation marks ( $ % + - . / ), and the space character. C39Tools supports the standard 44 character version Code 39 and Full ASCII Code 39 barcodes. The fonts come in both TrueType and Type 1 PostScript format.
